Understanding Penile Implants

A penile implant, or penile prosthesis, is a medical device surgically placed entirely inside the body to provide a reliable, long-term solution for severe Erectile Dysfunction (ED). It allows men to achieve an erection suitable for intercourse on demand. These devices are completely concealed and do not change the sensation in the penis or the ability to have an orgasm or ejaculate.  

There are two primary types of penile implants available. Dr. Andrew Sun, with his extensive experience and expertise, will help you determine which type is best suited for your individual anatomy, health status, lifestyle, and personal goals.

This is the most common type of penile implant chosen by men worldwide, largely because it most closely mimics a natural erection and flaccid state. The 3-piece IPP consists of:

  1. Two Cylinders: Soft, inflatable cylinders placed inside the erection chambers (corpora cavernosa) of the penis.
  2. A Fluid Reservoir: A small container holding sterile saline (salt water), typically placed discreetly under the abdominal muscles or in the pelvis.
  3. A Pump and Release Valve: A small pump placed within the scrotum, between the testicles.

How it works

When you want an erection, you gently squeeze the pump in the scrotum several times. This transfers the saline fluid from the reservoir into the cylinders in the penis, causing them to inflate and create a firm, rigid erection. When you wish to deflate the device, you press the release valve on the pump, allowing the fluid to flow back into the reservoir, returning the penis to a soft, completely flaccid, and natural-appearing state.

Malleable implants represent a simpler design. They consist of Two Semi-Rigid Rods: A pair of firm but bendable rods surgically placed within the erection chambers of the penis.

How it works

The penis remains in a semi-rigid state at all times. To have intercourse, you simply bend the penis upwards into an erect position. When finished, you bend it back down, usually against the body, for concealment under clothing.

  • Fewer mechanical parts compared to inflatable devices.
